India is soon becoming the rape capital of the world. Everyday there are numerous women related violences that occur in the capital of India - Delhi. One such case that was sensationalized by the media in December 2013 was that of an innocent young girl who was brutally raped and murdered in a moving bus, while her friend was merciless beaten and left to tell the tale. The rape victim later died of her injuries, but left the country burning with rage. There were protests all over the country, which were joined in by women as well as men.
In a country which takes pride in its cultural background and gender stereotypes, I would like to study if men and women journalist covered this story differently. I would like to do a content analysis of the articles that were published in five major English dailies in India for the first three days after this unfortunate event occurred.

What is the benefit of doing just the first three day? Would it be worthwhile to expand and perhaps look at a week afterwards? I feel like the sample would be small with only three days because I'm not sure how many actual stories each daily would publish. Are you focusing on framing, agenda setting, or maybe both?
ReplyDeleteThat is a valid concern. I initially suggested three days, because this case was an eye opener for almost everybody in India, including media publications. It was a result of a complete break down of the system. Hence, every aspect of the case was covered by the news outlets. The first three days are significant, because there were reports that blamed the victim excessively, blamed the officials and a lot of gender issues were out in the open. Very few reports actually blamed the culprits. Hence this is a good sample to gauge what kind of sources were reported and did the gender of the journalist play an important role in reporting the news. I don't think framing or agenda setting will be an apt theory here. I am still working on finding one. Thank you for your comment.
